Born April 1979, Sonia V. McDaniel is of African American and Filipino descent. Her family moved from the nation’s capital to the San Francisco Bayview community when she was five years old. Her art draws from themes of displacement and resilience per the black and brown communities she hails from and has been affiliated with throughout her working career. The resilience expressed in her art juxtaposes the backdrop of San Francisco’s period of “urban renewal” or the current political climate with a spiritual, universal, multi-dimensional and esoteric idealism that’s kept her grounded since youth. Using multimedia: acrylic, coffee, and vast textured tools on canvas and wood, she strives to bring Afro-Futurism to the present, shedding light on the urgent call to help bring forth a collective awakened consciousness through expansion and ascension.
The collection "Ascension on High" is inspired by her son Cameron Turpeau, and photographers that capture the essence of San Francisco: Barry Shapiro, Dave Glass, Steve Jackson Jr., Lynn Adler, David Johnson, Kenneth P. Green Sr.
